Biography
Born in Killeen Texas in the mid 1980’s, Jimmy’s early years were a whirlwind of new people and places. His father’s military career led to a move to Germany to support peacekeeping operations as the Berlin Wall fell. Those formative years were spent exploring the cobbled streets of medieval towns, the ancient beauty of old German forests, and the rolling fields and winding grapevine dotted mountain paths of Bavaria’s wine growing region.
A tragic accident ended his father’s military career early and necessitated a move back to the United States - rural Western Iowa being the destination. While the endless fields of corn were less than inspiring - the dawn of the digital age presented new opportunities. Jimmy spent those years learning to build computers and utilize a lot of early digital imaging programs. He also took up photography in high school and experimented with digital manipulation of scanned film photos in a move that heralded the eventual complete takeover of digital photography.
Upon graduation Jimmy joined the United States Air Force and once again set out into the wider world; Texas again, then Arizona, then Nevada and then England where he would spend the final five years of his military service. In England Jimmy bought a new Digital SLR camera intent on using it to photograph his travels - but as two ongoing wars strained the Air Force’s public affairs staff Jimmy was asked to photograph military ceremonies, promotions and other important events around base which quickly took up much of his free time. Feeling burnt out by long hours, Jimmy eventually retired his camera.
In 2019, military career long behind him, college too - having earned a BS in Marine Ecology, Jimmy took on a job monitoring the Elm Street dam removal in Kingston, Massachusetts where he still resides. Knowing essentially nothing about the process of dam removals, he dug his camera out of a drawer and set about documenting the process photographically - with a bit of photojournalist flair. These photos became extremely popular and encouraged Jimmy to continue his photographic work long after the dam was gone. Realizing that high quality photography was generally outside of the budget of many people doing good work he endeavors to capture what he can and make it available to the participants. This website has been created to separate his political photography from his professional life given the current times.
Gear Used
I use a Micro 4/3rds system primarily - which is a relatively small sensor compared to other interchangeable lens camera systems. While this does lower overall image quality to a degree, it allows for much smaller lens design and I’m oftentimes carrying my camera in difficult environments where reducing weight and size is necessary. Some of my favorite photos are taken on a Lumix GX85 which is a 10 year old compact design camera that I can stuff in a coat pocket.
I’m also an FAA Part 107 commercially licensed drone pilot. I fly a Mini 3 Pro ultra-lightweight drone primarily keeping with the theme of portability being important to my work.
